Introduction to Jinan University
Jinan University – A Cradle for Oversea Students
Back in l906, when Jinan University had its beginning in Nanjing, it was called “Jinan Academy”, the first university for overseas Chinese students. “Ji Nan” means to spread Chinese ethics and culture all over the world. In 1921 National Jinan School and the Southeast University combined to form Shanghai University of Commerce, the first University of Commerce in China. In 1923, it moved to Zhenru of Shanghai and became Jinan University of Commerce. In 1927, Jinan School expanded and became National Jinan University, which, in September 1949, merged with Fudan University and Chiao-Tung University. In 1958, Jinan University was re-established in Guangzhou.

Jinan University has been considered the superlative university for overseas Chinese. In the early days, the university formulated its school motto: loyalty, credibility, sincerity and piety with the aim to cultivate talents with the outstanding traditional moral and culture of the Chinese nation and the essence of modern science. In the past 20 years of reform and opening, Jinan University has adhered to the guiding policy of catering to the higher educational needs of Chinese from overseas, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and carrying out on-going educational reforms. Since 1978, over 10,000 students of different levels from more than 90 countries in five continents, or from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan have graduated from the university.

The University comprises the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Science and Engineering, the College of Economics, the College of Management, the College of Life Science and Technology, the College of Medicine, the College of Chinese Language and Culture, the College of Foreign Language, the College of Journalism & Commnication, the College of Pharmacology, the College of Information Science & Technology, the College of Law, the College of International, the  College of Tourism, the College of Education, and Zhuhai College as well. In the 20 colleges there are 44 departments and 61 undergraduate specialties. Jinan University is one of the first universities in the country that have the right to confer academic degrees.  In 1989, with the approval of the State Education Ministry, Jinan University, as the only experimental unit that enrolled postgraduates from outside of the mainland, began to enroll postgraduate students from overseas, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. To further satisfy the educational needs of Chinese working overseas, or in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, in 1989, the university began to offer part-time postgraduate programmes to students outside the mainland. Also the university was among the  universities with a Master of Business Administration (MBA& EMBA) programme then.Master of Public Administration,Master of Professional Accounting and Master of Engineering are also offered.

    Situated in Tianhe District of Guangzhou, Jinan University covers an area of 1.74 million square metres. It has many advanced facilities for both teaching and scientific research. The school library, boasts of a collection of 2700000 volumes. The College of Medicine has in Guanzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai , Qingyuan and Jiangmen six affiliated hospitals of Class A, Grade 3, the highest of national level in hospital classification.

    Jinan University is one of China’s 100 key universities in the 21st century. Following the principle of “scale, structure, quality and effectiveness”, the university is doing its best to further develop postgraduate education. Today, it has 5 post-doctoral research station. And Doctoral programmes in 39 disciplines and Master programmes in 133 disciplines have been instituted. At present, the postgraduate population totals more than 4,200; among them 886 are overseas Chinese, foreign citizens of Chinese origin or students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. From 1978 to 2005, 6567 postgraduates successfully finished their programmes; 606 of them were from the outside of the mainland.

Admissions
       The university has a registration office in Hong Kong and Macao respectively. An applicant will go through the procedure of application, preliminary examinations (written exams) and an interview. Relevant regulations and arrangements are as follows:

1.  Prerequisites for application

  People from Hong Kong, Macao and, Taiwan; overseas Chinese and foreign citizens of Chinese origin with good moral character and good health can apply if they meet the following conditions:

A.  An applicant for a doctoral degree programme should

   1. have obtained a master degree from a university recognized by this university; or
   2. have graduated from a university recognized by this university, have had working experience of five years or more and be able to supply materials such as academic works, theses, research achievements or innovations, patents which prove that his/her research ability has reached that of one with a master degree (and for anyone applying for a PhD programme in medicine should have obtained the qualification certificate to practice medicine from the local medical committee.); or
   3. have met the conditions required by the relevant department, college or tutor.

B.   An applicant for a master degree programme should

   1. have obtained a bachelor degree from a university recognized by this university; or
   2. have an education equal to junior college in the mainland of China, have had two years’ working experience and certain research achievements; or
   3. have met the conditions required by the relevant department, college or tutor.

  C. An applicant for Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme should have, in general, had four years’ working experience apart from the conditions in B.

  D. An applicant for a part-time master degree programme in any of the specialities of the medical college should be a medical college graduate and have obtained a bachelor degree.

2.  Application procedure

Apart from the completed application form, the applicant should submit the following certificates:

    1. A copy of certified transcript in a sealed envelope by the university the applicant graduated from or studied at;
    2. Two sealed recommendations in unified recommendation form by two references with an academic title of senior lecturer or associate professor or higher; for an MBA application, one of the references can be the applicant’s former employer;
    3. One copy of education certificates such as diploma, and professional qualification certificate;
    4. Any one of the following certificates: CET, TOEFL, GRE or GMAT, GCE, or records of English proficiency tests of similar level; and
    two recent 1” photos (half-length, off-hat) of the same negative.

4. Examinations, interview (written exams when necessary) and enrolment

     Exam time: Master porogram: 7-8, April, 2007
  Doctoral porogram: spring semester：4-5,November,2006；fall semester： 17-18, March, 2007;

  Education System and Tuition

     1. 3 years for full-time students working for a doctoral degree; 2 to 3 years for students for a master degree.

     2. In general, 4 years for part-time students for a doctoral or master degree. The period of study can be either shortened (not less than 3 years) or lengthened (not more than 5 years) according to the situation of the student.

     3. Tuition fees:

(No extra charges for dissertation defence, charges for which are included in the tuition fee of the academic year，The lodging fees for full-time students are about 3500 yuan per year. The actual amount depends on your lodging standand.)

  Modes of Studies

1. The mode of studies for the full-time postgraduate (doctoral and master) is basically the same as that for mainland students, that is, a combination of tutor responsibility and collective tutoring, and a combination of coursework and degree dissertation. However, he/she can select relevant courses according to the realities in Hong Kong, Macao and overseas.

2. A part-time postgraduate (master) must complete all the required courses, normally with 28~30 credits including five to seven degree courses (according to different specialities), with average marks of 75 or more before he/she is qualified for dissertation writing and then dissertation defence. Generally, he/she must have 8 hours a week or four days a month or not less than 20 days a term for tutorials on campus. The times for tutorials should be decided between the tutor and the student in the first week of each term, approved by the department (institute, centre) and submitted to the Postgraduate School for file and examination.

    3. A part-time postgraduate (master) should take a foreign language course at school (arranged by the Postgraduate School) unless his/her English level has reached the required standard when entering the university.

    4. A part-time postgraduate of a master programme without an undergraduate education should pass exams on 4-6 key undergraduate courses of the speciality during his/her study years. Failing to pass the exam(s), he/she must take the relevant courses and exams until he/she passes..

5. At present, the credit system is not in practice for part-time doctoral programmes. The student must take 3 to 4 basic courses and specialized courses, and master a first foreign language and a second foreign language (for some specialities only). He/she should have tutorials by the tutor(s) at regular time on campus. The times for tutorials should be decided between the tutor and student, and submitted to the Postgraduate School for file.

招生辦法

　　學(xué)校分別在香港、澳門設(shè)報(bào)名點(diǎn)。實(shí)行以報(bào)名申請(qǐng)、初試（筆試）和面試為主的錄取辦法。有關(guān)規(guī)定及安排如下：        

   （一）報(bào)考資格                                                 

　　港澳臺(tái)地區(qū)永久居民、海外華僑、外籍華人，品德良好，身體健康，且具備下述條件者均可報(bào)名申請(qǐng)。

　�。�. 報(bào)考攻讀博士學(xué)位者，須具備：                         

　      1. 在本大學(xué)認(rèn)可之大學(xué)取得碩士學(xué)位者；或
        2. 在本大學(xué)認(rèn)可之大學(xué)畢業(yè)，有6年以上工作資歷，且提出能夠顯示其研究能力已達(dá)碩士水平之著作、學(xué)術(shù)論文、科研成果或發(fā)明、專利等資料（攻讀醫(yī)學(xué)博士學(xué)位者，需在當(dāng)?shù)蒯t(yī)務(wù)委員會(huì)取得行醫(yī)資格）；或
        3. 具備有關(guān)院系及導(dǎo)師規(guī)定的其它條件。

    B. 報(bào)考攻讀碩士學(xué)位者，須具備：                         

        1. 在本大學(xué)認(rèn)可之大學(xué)畢業(yè)，且獲得學(xué)士學(xué)位者；或        
        2. 相當(dāng)于內(nèi)地（大陸）大專學(xué)歷，有2年以上的較豐富的工作資歷與一定的科學(xué)研究成果；或
        3. 具備有關(guān)院系及導(dǎo)師規(guī)定的其它條件。                   

　　C. 報(bào)考攻讀工商管理碩士學(xué)位（ＭＢＡ）者，除須具備Ｂ項(xiàng)文件外，一般還應(yīng)有四年工作經(jīng)驗(yàn)。

　　D. 報(bào)考醫(yī)學(xué)院各專業(yè)兼讀制碩士研究生，需是醫(yī)學(xué)院本科畢業(yè)，并獲得學(xué)士學(xué)位。

  （二）報(bào)考手續(xù)                                              

    報(bào)名者除繳交已填妥之申請(qǐng)表外，并須提交下列各項(xiàng)證明文件：                        

     1. 由畢業(yè)或肄業(yè)之大學(xué)密封的學(xué)業(yè)成績(jī)表一份；           
     2. 統(tǒng)一格式的密封推薦書2份，由高級(jí)講師、副教授以上之學(xué)者2人推薦；報(bào)考攻讀工商管理碩士學(xué)位（ＭＢＡ）者，其中一位推薦人可由其前雇主推薦；
     3. 證書、文憑等學(xué)歷證件及專業(yè)資格證明副本各一份；     
     4. 如有本人英語成績(jī)之證明—全國(guó)大學(xué)英語統(tǒng)一考試（ＣＥＴ）、托�？荚嚕ǎ裕希疲牛蹋�、美國(guó)文理或商科研究院入學(xué)考試（ＧＲＥ或ＧＭＡＴ）、英語普通程度會(huì)考英文（ＧＣＥ）或相當(dāng)水平英語考試的成績(jī),外國(guó)留學(xué)生提供漢語水平考試成績(jī)（HSK）提供其中之一即可。

  考試地點(diǎn)：
    碩士：在香港報(bào)名的考生在香港考試，在澳門報(bào)名的考生在澳門考試，在暨南大學(xué)報(bào)名的考生在暨南大學(xué)考試。
    博士：所有考生均在廣州暨南大學(xué)的校本部考試。

  　　凡考試成績(jī)合格者,接通知后請(qǐng)攜帶上述證書、文憑等證明文件正本來我校參加面試。面試內(nèi)容涉及英語、專業(yè)基礎(chǔ)、專業(yè)知識(shí)及科研潛力等方面， 根據(jù)申請(qǐng)者之具體情況確定，同等學(xué)力考生均需加試2門與初試不同的專業(yè)科目。正式錄取通知書將于2007年７月10日前函寄申請(qǐng)者。

學(xué) 制 與 學(xué) 費(fèi)

    （一）全日制攻讀博士學(xué)位研究生學(xué)習(xí)年限為3年；攻讀碩士學(xué)位研究生學(xué)習(xí)年限為2至3年。
    （二）兼讀制攻讀博士、碩士學(xué)位研究生學(xué)習(xí)年限一般為4年，但亦可根據(jù)學(xué)生的具體情況適當(dāng)縮短（不少于3年）或延長(zhǎng)（不超過5年）。
    （三）攻讀博士、碩士學(xué)位研究生2007年學(xué)費(fèi)收費(fèi)標(biāo)準(zhǔn)（港幣）： 

（碩士或博士論文答辯費(fèi)可在當(dāng)年度學(xué)費(fèi)中開支，不必另付；全日制學(xué)生的住宿費(fèi)每年約為3500元港幣，按實(shí)際住宿標(biāo)準(zhǔn)支付；華僑、港澳臺(tái)籍學(xué)生按內(nèi)地委培經(jīng)費(fèi)標(biāo)準(zhǔn)。）

培 養(yǎng) 方 式

　  （一）全日制攻讀博士或碩士學(xué)位研究生的培養(yǎng)方式基本上與國(guó)內(nèi)生相同，即采用導(dǎo)師負(fù)責(zé)與集體培養(yǎng)相結(jié)合，以及課程學(xué)習(xí)與學(xué)位論文相結(jié)合。但可根據(jù)港澳臺(tái)及海外實(shí)際選修有關(guān)課程。
（二）兼讀制碩士學(xué)位研究生須按規(guī)定修完課程，一般情況下取得28~30學(xué)分,學(xué)位課程5至7門（因?qū)�業(yè)而異）平均成績(jī)至少為75分,方可正式進(jìn)入碩士學(xué)位論文撰寫與答辯。一般每周應(yīng)有８學(xué)時(shí)接受導(dǎo)師面授,如將面授時(shí)間集中使用, 每月至少到學(xué)校學(xué)習(xí)４天,每學(xué)期到校學(xué)習(xí)不少于２０天。具體面授時(shí)間應(yīng)在每學(xué)期開學(xué)后第一周內(nèi)由導(dǎo)師與學(xué)生商定,經(jīng)系（所、中心）審批,報(bào)研究生部備案,以便檢查。
工商管理碩士（ＭＢＡ）的要求及學(xué)費(fèi)另見MBA招生簡(jiǎn)章。         
（三）兼讀制碩士學(xué)位研究生，除入學(xué)時(shí)英語水平已達(dá)要求,獲準(zhǔn)免修外,一般應(yīng)來校修習(xí)外國(guó)語課程, 上課時(shí)間由研究生部集中安排。           醫(yī)學(xué)全在線  gydjdsj.org.cn                                    
（四）凡未獲得在讀專業(yè)本科學(xué)歷的兼讀制碩士學(xué)位研究生,在學(xué)期間,須通過該專業(yè)本科主干課程（4－6門）考試; 未通過者須補(bǔ)習(xí)有關(guān)課程,參加考試,成績(jī)須達(dá)到及格。
（五）兼讀制博士學(xué)位研究生暫未實(shí)行學(xué)分制,但應(yīng)修習(xí)3至4門基礎(chǔ)課及專業(yè)課,還應(yīng)掌握第一外國(guó)語及第二外國(guó)語（部分專業(yè)）。學(xué)生每月定期到校接受導(dǎo)師指導(dǎo),授課時(shí)間由導(dǎo)師與學(xué)生商定,報(bào)研究生部備案。
（六）其他未盡事宜,按暨南大學(xué) 《 海外及港澳臺(tái)地區(qū)攻讀博士、碩士學(xué)位研究生培養(yǎng)方案》辦理。

報(bào)名日期：2006年12月1日至31日。本校2007年博士生招生為春秋兩次，秋季采用網(wǎng)上報(bào)名方式。報(bào)名者請(qǐng)登陸 http：//yz.jnu.edu.cn“報(bào)名登記系統(tǒng)”網(wǎng)絡(luò)注冊(cè)報(bào)名，并下載有關(guān)報(bào)名表格。
未獲得碩士學(xué)位的報(bào)考者，在復(fù)試時(shí)需要加試兩門與初試科目不同的本科課程，
      具體科目請(qǐng)聯(lián)絡(luò)導(dǎo)師；應(yīng)屆考生必須在入學(xué)報(bào)到時(shí)提供碩士學(xué)位證書原件方可注冊(cè)。
