　　第九天：拆分組合 翻譯快樂---確定詞義

　　在了解拆分句子結(jié)構(gòu)以后，更難的一步---確定詞義就到了眼前。這一步主要涉及下列情況：

　　1)一詞多義

　　常見詞一般具有多義性，翻譯時要根據(jù)搭配和上下文確定意義，如develop除了“發(fā)展”的意思外，還有“形成”的意思，intellectual常表示“知識的”的意思，agree常翻譯成“認為”。

　　2)詞組或固定搭配

　　詞組或固定搭配，一般有固定的譯法，翻譯時要注意，不能完全根據(jù)字面翻譯。

　　3)看上下句確定詞義

　　有時，尤其是句首出現(xiàn)代詞時，需要閱讀待翻譯部分之前的句子，才能弄清句子的意思�，F(xiàn)在以前面的三個例子說明如何確定詞義。

　　例一，

　　72. “In short”, a leader of the new school contends, “the scientific revolution, as we call it, was largely the improvement and invention and use of a series of instruments that expanded the reach of science in innumerable directions.” (1994-72)

　　本句可以分四個意群確定詞義。

　　第一個意群：in short簡言之school學派contend 堅持認為，爭辯，討論

　　第二個意群：the scientific revolution 科學革命(不要譯成“科技革命”)

　　as we call it 我們所謂的(科學革命)

　　第三個意群：largely 在很大程度上a series of一系列instruments器具、儀器

　　第四個意群：expand拓展reach影響范圍；區(qū)域innumerable無數(shù)的，數(shù)不清的direction方面

　　例二，

　　72. How well the predictions will be validated by later performance depends upon the amount, reliability, and appropriateness of the information used and on the skill and wisdom with which it is interpreted. (1995-72)

　　本句可以分三個意群確定詞義。

　　第一個意群：How well the predictions will be validated by later performance。

　　how well字面意思是“多好”，用來形容動詞validated的程度，可變通為“在多大程度上”

　　predictions這些預(yù)測(predictions是復(fù)數(shù)，翻譯時前面加“這些”)

　　validate證實

　　performance表現(xiàn)

　　第二個意群：depend on一般譯為“取決于”

　　amount 數(shù)量reliability可靠性(增詞法)

　　appropriateness 適宜性，合適性(增詞法)

　　information used 所用的信息(定語前置)

　　注意：名詞+of+名詞---后面的名詞整個作前面名詞的定語。

　　第三個意群：with which it is interpreted，其中it指代information。with譯成“用于”。被動語態(tài)可以變成主動語態(tài)：The information is interpreted with the skill and wisdom.(也取決于用來解釋這些信息(所用的)技巧和智慧”。

　　例三，

　　62. Social science is that branch of intellectual enquiry which seeks to study humans and their endeavors in the same reasoned, orderly, systematic, and dispassioned manner that natural scientists use for the study of natural phenomena.(2003-62)

　　本句可以分三個意群確定詞義。

　　第一個意群：

　　social science社會科學 branch分支intellectual enquiry知識探索

　　第二個意群：seek力圖endeavor行為，努力reasoned理性的dispassioned冷靜的，客觀的in…manner以…方式

　　第三個意群：natural scientist自然科學家

　　在英譯漢部分，確定詞義可以說是最難的。復(fù)習時應(yīng)將自己的翻譯與參考譯文進行對比，找出漢語表達方面的差距，才能做到考試時胸有成竹。否則，大意似乎翻譯出來了，但仔細對照原文，發(fā)現(xiàn)意思相差懸殊。前面所說的agree，很多同學只會翻譯成“同意”，而不知道根據(jù)上下文翻譯成“認為”，就是一個教訓。
